Joel
Edelstein, born in the United States, is a Brazilian resident, living in Rio de
Janeiro with his Brazilian daughter Mariane since 1992. He graduated in Political
Science from the University of Illinois at Chicago Circle (1970) and received
a Master of Social Work from New York University (1982). His involvement with
political and social issues dates back to the 1960's anti-war and civil rights
movements.
From his first visit to Brazil in the 1970's he developed an interest in Brazilian
society, culture and politics. An entrepreneur and former art dealer, specializing
in contemporary Brazilian art, he decided to create the Edelstein Center for Social
Research to promote innovative thinking and advance the public debate on the challenges
Brazil and Latin America face in confronting global transformations.
He believes that while the present wave of globalization presents
risks, it also offers opportunities, and that creative solutions are
the product of experimenting with new thinking and confrontation of
ideas. It is Joel Edelstein's hope that the Center will contribute
to the creation of other similar initiatives to support Brazil's development,
democratic institutions and policy-making.
